What Rough BeastOpening Line MemeThe idea here is to post the first line of five works in progress. I'm kind of fudging a bit. President Charles King was a man with problems. - Homefront. I'm counting as a WIP because it's undergoing a massive trim for length. I tend to work out naked. - Meredith MacKenzie and the Uruk Empire. It doesn't go out to the agent until Monday, so it counts.
Progress Report for Nov 22, 2005Homefront (Warfront Book 1) - Out being line edited. I need to make a few final revisions when it comes back, but after that, it goes into the Baen slush. I also have a handy dandy skip to the front of the line coupon, so it should get read in January instead of November of '06.
I should be in bed.I'm not, but I should be. I'm making progress on Homefront. Of a sort, anyway. Frankly, I'm hating this battle. I want to get it over with. I want to finish the book. I'm probably going to end up rewriting the damn thing because of that, which is more time spent on this one instead of working on the next one.
Like the lady said, "Bored now."I suppose it's odd that I should be so bored considering everything that's going on. I've got finals next week and the week after. I've got a term paper due on Thursday, a paper due in about 90 minutes, an algebra test on thursday, and a group project, for which I don't yet have a group, due a week from today. On top of that, I've got a friend in from out of town. I just got my Dean's List Certificate for last semester, I should be getting my regent's test results sometime this week and my 28th birthday is less than a month away.
105,194Which is a little over a thousand words today. Of course, I hadn't worked on the novel in 17 days. To much school. To much work on Sharing Quarters. Still, that makes something like 9000 words in the last two weeks. I just wish I'd actually made more progress story wise. I mean, yeah, the scenes I wrote needed to be written, but they're not vital, plot moving scenes. The next one is. It's a biggy. It's Barney's Super Tuesday speech. Big, big scene. It lays out the entire campaign.
General Status Check1). Homefront is at 98,259. I'll most likely break 100,000 words today or tomorrow. So far, during the holidays, I've written 20,513 words. Not as much as I'd hoped to do, but satisfying enough. 2). I've decided to call the 'What Rough Beast' series 'Soft Rains'. A thousand quatlous to anyone who gets the references. Katherine, you can't play, cause I know you'll get at least one of them. The outline (very rough outline) stands at 1212 words and lays out a total of twelve novels. I've even got them divided by what I think will make nice Omnibus titles.
That whole new year's thangOkay, so I said a year ago I wanted to finish my novel this year and get published. Well, I did neither. But it isn't from a lack of trying. I am, as of this moment, at 88,157 words. That's a whole lot of words. Over 500 pages of them (and that doesn't count time spent revising shit that wasn't working and all the stuff I've ended up tossing on the scrap heap). As for getting published, it was kind of predicated on me finishing stuff. Well, I've got one story in circulation at the moment (same one I had in cir last year). This year, my new years resolutions are as follows.
Ppppppththththt!!!!!!!!!!!Okay, I've had a crappy night. I had it on the tail end of a crappy day. I'm tired, grumpy, and I have to be up way to freaking early in the morning. And I'm listening to the *depressing* Melissa Etheridge songs. On the other hand, I've got a pretty good idea what I want to do for my next novel (tentatively titled 'What Rough Beast'). I think I've got the problems solved with my current book. I've got three weeks off to finish it. And I think I've got a title. Maybe. Tomorrow had better be better than today though, or I'm demanding a refund.
