More on Jim.As I mentioned in a previous post, Jim Baen has had a stroke. It apparently happened sometime Monday night, and he's been in ICU ever since. Baen books is set up to continue in the event that he does pass, but I feel like I've been kicked in the gut. First, let me say that I have never met Jim. I've exchanged a couple of emails with him, but it's because of Jim and the opportunities that he affords writers that I'm published. I've been waiting, eagerly, for the last six months to get word on whether or not Jim would be getting a copy of my manuscript. To say that I have an emotional attachment to Jim is a bit of an understatement. He is someone I've looked up to for a long time. He's someone who is willing to give new authors a chance. He is someone who is known for giving his authors a fair shake. He's someone who is not just a science fiction publisher, but also a fan. He's someone who, like it or not, has had a hand in shaping the modern Science Fiction landscape. In short, Jim is someone who gets it on every level. When I heard the news, I was completely floored. I knew Jim was having health problems, but somehow, it was a total shock. I'm worried. Not because I want him to publish my book. Not because I have doubts about the future of my favorite publishing company. I'm worried because a man I respect and admire, a man who is good and fair and decent, may be about to leave the world. If it happens, I think the world will be a poorer place for it. But I hope, desperately, that it doesn't, and I hope anyone who reads this will keep Jim in their thoughts and prayers.
