Eric is hard to describe. What do you say about an unrepentant socialist who writes these fantastic novels extolling the virtues of good old American hillbillies? Probably that he spins a darn good yarn, and he is also the man responsible for buying my first short story.

A relatively new author and a personal friend. Jennifer's work runs from the highly humorous (anyone who's worked in modern corporate America will find "Team Player" disturbingly familiar) to the apocolyptic. Her serious stories deals with the social ramifications of technology and cultural trends.

Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, which is series of urban fantasy mysteries about Harry Dresden, the only Wizard listed in the Chicago Yellowpages. His stuff is just plane addictive, especially if you like detective stories.

One of my personal favorites. John's first book, A Hymn Before Battle, was published by Baen books in 2001. Since then, he's gone on to write so many novels I've lost count. His work includes the "Legacy of Aldenata" series, the "Council Wars" series, the "Special Circumstances" series, the "Empire of Man" series co-authored with David Weber, the "Looking Glass" series (the second of which is co-authored with Travis S. Taylor), the "Von Neumann's War" series co-authored with Travis S. Taylor and a handful of books set in his "Legacy of Aldenata" series co-authored with Tom Kratman, Julie Cochran or Michael Z. Williamson.

Katherine writes an eclectic mix of stuff. Everything from humor stories about aliens looking for decent take out to urban fantasy about the price one has to pay for magic. She also happens to be my girlfriend.

Michael Z. Williamson's first novel, Freehold, was published by Baen Books in January 2004. It took me about a two pages before I was completely engrossed. By chapter seven (the end of the sample chapters available on Baen's website) I had gone out and bought the book. By the middle of the book, the follow up book was on my must buy list, and by the end, Michael was on my 'buy anything he writes' series.

Another of my favorite authors, Doc Travis is responsible for Warp Speed and The Quantum Connection as well as co-authoring several books with John Ringo. Doc's fairly new, but his stuff is well worth reading.

My author profile over at Jim Baen's Universe. They're the first place to publish me, and the company does good things for my ego.

Publishers

Baen is one of the big names as far as science fiction and fantasy go today. They publish five or six titles a month (some in hardback, some in paper back, usually a mix of first issue and reprints of backlist, but all are available in eBook format at the same time through Webscription). You might notice that quite a few of the authors above are Baen authors. This is not a coincidence. There would be more, except David Weber doesn't have a website (well, he does, but it's just a picture and a link to his page in the Baen online cataloge).

Tor is another other big name in science fiction and fantasy. They're here cause they're well respected in the industry and they publish some good books. A word of warning though, their website hasn't been updated in ages.

Web Comics

An alien, his robot, their shoplifted genetically engineered engineer and a broken down old space ship. This is probably the single funniest comic on the web. Dangerously funny. The night I discovered it, I laughed so hard I gave myself a headache and a nose bleed. Start at the beginning and take in small doses. Spew warnings apply.

A boy, his girlfriend, his violent yet beautiful roommate, and an "anthroPC" who doesn't quite get the concept of tact. Subculture humor abounds. What every romantic sitcom should be. Actually funny.

Second only to Freefall in terms of being consistantly, laugh out loud funny. A company of mercenaries, their not so bright leader, and a sergeant that looks like a pile of crap with arms, eyes and a mouth try their best to line their pockets in the 31st century. Includes the Glow O Doom, the Tube of Happiness, Plasma Guns, a whole lot of dead lawyers, and 950 Million guys named Gav. Oh, and the ever popular Omminus Hummmmmm....

This is Pete Abrams comic. It's about Torg. And Torg's friend Riff. And Torg's homicidal switchblade weilding rabbit who wants to kill Santa Claus. And Zoe, the cute girl who happens to turn into a Camel sometimes. And Riff's hyperactive ferrit Kiki. And Aylee, an alien from another dimension who happens to mutate every once in a while. Somewhere in there you have a Vampire, Demons, flesh eating kittens from hell, a psychotic robot assassin, a one eyed scientist from the future and Legos (cause everybody loves Lego week). It's niffty. Worship the Comic.

I'm not entirely sure what to say about this one. The comic is, for the most part, about a guy named Davan MacIntire. Davan is, without a doubt, a jerk. The thing is, the way Davan goes about being a jerk is not only incredibly funny, but Davan is the kind of jerk you wish you could be sometimes. Lots of gaming humor. Not for the politically correct crowd or the easily offended.

I don't play paintball, but damn if this isn't a funny comic anyway. Anyone who has every geeked over anything from case mods to the latest greatest RPG suppliment will enjoy this one.
