John Scalzi is running for SFWA presidentOkay, confession. I've got some mixed feelings about SFWA. The reasons are long and varied, but let's just say that the organization has some major warts. However, after seeing the Ballot for the elections this year, John Scalzi has announced a write in campaign for President. Can he win? I'm not sure, but darn do I hope he does, because for the first time in ages, I have some hope that someone might be able to solve some of the organization's problems. For my info, go to http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/004960.html
My First Piece of Fan MailI had a bit of a long day today, but I found this waiting for me when I got home. Geoffrey Kidd sent a message using the contact form at Thank you for the story. I got to read a treeware ARC of "Best of JBU" and All I can say is wow. I've been writing for a while now, and this is the first time I've ever gotten feedback out of the blue on my work. It's a good feeling. A darn good feeling in fact. First, someone not only enjoyed my work, but enjoyed it enough to seek me out and tell me so. Then there's that last part. If you haven't seen the table of contents for The Best of Jim Baen's Universe, you don't know just how much of a complement that is. Some of the names on the list are Mike Resnick, who has 5 Hugos and a Nebula; Elizabeth Bear, who has a Campbell award; Gregory Benford who has a couple of Nebulas; David Drake; L. E. Modesitt, JR.; David Freer and a lot of others. Seriously, having someone tell me my work compares favorably to these people is the highest of complements. I officially declare today a good day.
300I went to see 300 on Friday. I'm going to start this by saying that this was, simply put, one of the best movies I've ever seen. On a scale of 1 to 10, it easily, almost effortlessly, scores a 10. This is, simply put, the movie every action film ever made wants to be. More than that, it's one of the most visually stunning movies ever filmed, and on top of that.
Of Agents and QueriesI decided that with Meredith MacKenzie and the Uruk Empire, I didn't want to do the 'submit, wait a year, get rejected, rinse, repeat' thing. Instead, I decided to try and get an agent.
Opening Line MemeThe idea here is to post the first line of five works in progress. I'm kind of fudging a bit. President Charles King was a man with problems. - Homefront. I'm counting as a WIP because it's undergoing a massive trim for length. I tend to work out naked. - Meredith MacKenzie and the Uruk Empire. It doesn't go out to the agent until Monday, so it counts.
Maybe I can sell it again...I just sent 'The Girl With The Killer Eyes' off to escape pod. After all, I don't see why I shouldn't be paid a second time for that story if I can manage it.
Day Break is back.ABC finally got off it's rear end (where it apparently stores its head) and started posting episodes of the absolutely fantastic Time Loop Cop Drama Day Break on their website. Right now, the first ten episodes are available. They're suppose to post one every Monday for the next three weeks.
Someone's Political Bias is ShowingThe Washington Post recently announced it's list of Idiots of the Year. The winner is Laura Mallory, who tried to get Gwinnett county Georgia to ban the Harry Potter books from school libraries, despite the fact that she's never read them, because they promote witchcraft. Third Place goes to a guy in the UK who, on Guy Fawkes Night, stuck a rocket up his butt and tried to launch it. Fourth Place goes to the cops in Muzaffarpur, India who tried to arrest a 3-month-old baby for robbing a bus.
